How data storage conversion works

Data storage keeps decimal SI prefixes and binary IEC prefixes distinct. For example, 1 GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes while 1 GiB is 1,073,741,824 bytes.

Convert bytes to KB, MB, GB, TB or bits

Byte-size conversions use explicit decimal SI or binary IEC definitions. The decimal units KB, MB, GB and TB scale by powers of 1000. Binary units KiB, MiB, GiB and TiB scale by powers of 1024 and are kept separate in this converter.

One byte contains exactly 8 bits. For text decoding rather than storage-size arithmetic, use the bytes to string decoder and choose the text encoding.
