How time duration conversion works

Time-duration conversion uses the second as the base unit. Minutes, hours, fixed 24-hour days and seven-day weeks convert deterministically. Calendar months are intentionally not treated as one fixed duration because their length varies.

The interactive calculator, reference table and indexed pair pages all read from the same conversion registry, so unit definitions and formulas stay synchronized.

Convert units of time

Convert fixed durations between nanoseconds, microseconds, milliseconds, seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks and fortnights. The calculator uses exact fixed relationships such as 60 seconds = 1 minute, 60 minutes = 1 hour, 24 hours = 1 day and 7 days = 1 week.

Duration is different from calendar time

This page converts elapsed duration. It does not assign one fixed number of seconds to a calendar month because months vary from 28 to 31 days. Time-zone and calendar-date questions belong in the timezone converter.
